Barry’s mediation skills and experience, combined with 25 years as a forensic accountant, insolvency specialist and commercial negotiator, see him uniquely placed to deliver workable resolutions across a broad range of commercial disputes.

He is an accredited mediator with LEADR (now Resolution Institute), and an AMINZ Panel Mediator.

Barry also trained at Pepperdine University’s Law faculty in California, working closely with overseas mediation experts. This internationally respected programme focuses on the various stages of the process, identifying and working with different negotiation styles, and facilitating problem-solving in cultures across the world.

“Thanks again for all your hard work yesterday....the clients are thrilled to have walked away from litigation with a (hopefully!) enduring and workable solution, and you played a pivotal part in that”
— Canterbury Barrister

Before practising as a commercial mediator, Barry was the senior Forensic Partner at Deloitte and a partner at McCallum Petterson. Whilst he still assists Deloitte and its clients with a small number of continuing forensic matters, he no longer has any beneficial interest in Deloitte.

He is a Fellow Chartered Accountant (CAANZ) and a Certified Fraud Examiner, having conducted several hundred investigations into white-collar crime and probity matters. He was also previously an Accredited Insolvency Practitioner (RITANZ).

From July 2019 to March 2020, Barry was Chair of the New Zealand Institute of Skill and Technology (NZIST) Establishment Board, appointed by Hon. Chris Hipkins, Minister of Education. NZIST (now Te Pukenga) encompasses 16 polytechnics with 8,500 staff, 260,000 learners and $2.5 billion. Whilst this Chair role is now complete, Barry remained involved with the sector as a Board Director of two of the polytechnics (UCOL and SIT) until the end of 2022. He still has advisory roles for Te Pukenga in relation to the Telford campus and its relationship with the Telford Farm Board, owners of the 856-hectare educational facility near Balclutha..

The role of Chair has been a vital one requiring an ability to bring a collaborative approach to complex issues and to balance the change needed with maintaining successful stakeholder engagement across the sector.”
— Hon. Chris Hipkins, Minister of Education

As part of his governance roles, Barry was Director/Chair of Finance, Risk and Audit at UCOL Limited, Director/Chair of Finance, Risk and Audit at Southern Institute of Technology Limited and a Director of Southern Lakes English College Limited. He is also a Council Member of the Arbitrators and Mediators Association of New Zealand (AMINZ).
